European project Imagine-B5G comes to an end after an innovation cycle with Ubiwhere’s participation

Ubiwhere

Ubiwhere was part of the consortium of the European project Imagine-B5G, an initiative focused on the research, experimentation and validation of Beyond 5G (B5G) technologies. Within the scope of the Portuguese Facility, Ubiwhere contributed to the development and testing of innovative solutions in real-world environments, strengthening the link between research and practical application.

Integrated into the European Smart Networks and Services (SNS) programme, Imagine-B5G contributed to strengthening the European Beyond 5G experimentation ecosystem. By promoting the validation of technologies in real-world environments, the project paved the way for the adoption of more advanced solutions, with a direct impact on the digital transformation of multiple sectors. The project aimed to accelerate the maturity of B5G-based technologies by fostering their validation in operational contexts and encouraging collaboration between companies, research centres and public entities. This approach enabled the creation of a dynamic ecosystem designed to address concrete challenges across different sectors. Imagine-B5G enabled the simultaneous trialling of a high volume of innovative and advanced use cases across several verticals, including PPDR, smart agriculture, media, eHealth, education, transport, logistics, Industry 4.0 and energy.

During the course of Imagine-B5G, several use cases were developed under the Open Calls, organised into two main strands: Vertical Experiments, focused on validating solutions in real-world scenarios, with applications in areas such as smart mobility, connected health, public safety and AI-based network management; and Platform Extensions, aimed at evolving the experimentation infrastructure, strengthening technological capabilities and enabling further developments. These initiatives made it possible to validate solutions in real-life contexts, demonstrating both their technical feasibility and their potential impact across different sectors.

Ubiwhere’s contribution consisted of providing its edge computing platform, which is efficient in collecting and processing data, enabling real-time reporting, critical updates and actionable insights. Ubiwhere was part of the Portuguese facility of the Imagine-B5G project, which supported the implementation and validation of 13 projects stemming from the Open Calls. Within this ecosystem, Ubiwhere acted as the sponsoring entity of the N-TourXP-5G project, selected under Open Call 2, which focuses on the smart digitalisation of tourism and demonstrates the potential of 5G to transform visitor experiences across European destinations. In addition to leading the project’s communication and dissemination activities, Ubiwhere played an active role in fostering the experimentation ecosystem, supporting the development and validation of innovative solutions.

The Imagine-B5G project strengthened Europe’s research capacity and industrial competitiveness by establishing a scalable model for cross-facility experimentation. By validating Beyond 5G technologies in realistic operational environments, the initiative increased confidence in the adoption of advanced connectivity solutions across multiple sectors. Furthermore, the project’s Open Calls accelerated market innovation by enabling SMEs and start-ups to mature their technologies through large-scale testing, reducing time-to-market and mitigating deployment risks.
