Smart tourism pilot with 5G successfully completes testing at Ubiwhere facilities
The 5G smart tourism pilot, N-TourXP-5G, integrated into the European Imagine-B5G project, has reached the final testing phase, with all connectivity scenarios successfully validated. The official demonstration has already taken place at Ubiwhere’s facilities. The large-scale presentation is scheduled for next week during Aveiro Tech Week.
N-TourXP-5G aims to transform the tourism experience through 5G, edge computing and artificial intelligence, offering personalised, interactive and immersive experiences. To this end, the project is being developed in close collaboration with Ubiwhere and Capgemini, who are patrons of the pilot. At the same time, the 5G infrastructure is provided by the Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT), demonstrating how technology companies and research institutions can collaborate to innovate in the tourism sector.
In this context, Ubiwhere plays a strategic role, contributing its IoT platform to collect and process data in real-time, generate detailed reports, and provide actionable intelligence. During the tests, which took place between the 25th and the 29th of September, Ubiwhere supported the integration of new detection devices and the implementation of innovative services, demonstrating how technology can be applied directly in the field to benefit both tourists and local businesses.
The pilot operates in three main areas: immersive experiences, using AR, XR and VR to enrich cultural and tourist visits; connectivity and real-time recommendations, using a robust 5G network and artificial intelligence to provide personalised experiences for each visitor; and smart tourism management with monitoring of crowd density, traffic and environmental conditions to increase safety and efficiency at destinations. In addition to improving the tourist experience, the pilot supports local businesses and tourism authorities by optimising resources and services using the slo.travel platform. The combination of IoT, cloud and edge computing demonstrates the potential of 5G to revolutionise digital tourism, making it more interactive, personalised and sustainable.
Next week, during Aveiro Tech Week, on the 7th of September, from 2 pm to 5 pm, at Praça da República, everyone will be able to experience this innovative solution firsthand and discover how 5G technology is transforming the tourist experience.
