The Math Lab - Artificial Intelligence Open Lab is now open: a new innovation space created by Ubiwhere and the University of Aveiro
The year 2025 begins with great news: Ubiwhere and the University of Aveiro inaugurated the Math Lab - Artificial Intelligence Open Lab by Ubiwhere yesterday. This new space for promoting education arises from a partnership between the two entities. Its mission is to define relationships with the business community and support implementing innovative digital projects.
The Math Lab - Artificial Intelligence Open Lab by Ubiwhere opened its doors yesterday. In cooperation with Ubiwhere and the Maths Department at the University of Aveiro, it is equipped with modern technological tools designed to encourage research and the development of active learning methodologies.
The inauguration session was attended by Paulo Jorge Ferreira, Rector of the University of Aveiro, José Alexandre Almeida, Director of the Maths Department, and Rui A. Costa and Nuno Ribeiro, co-CEOs of Ubiwhere.
With the development of computing and the numerical, symbolic, and graphical power of technology in solving mathematical problems, this new lab can make teaching math more challenging from a pedagogical point of view. The Math Lab - Artificial Intelligence Open Lab by Ubiwhere aims to provide new learning methodologies that are more centred on student activity and developed in an environment of experimentation and simulation. It also aims to promote and benefit cooperation with society and the business community.
During the inauguration session, José Alexandre Almeida, Director of Dmat, mentioned that besides the furniture, this space has been equipped with a smartboard, augmented reality systems, a 3D printer, computer boards and equipment to support machine learning. In addition, the professor also pointed out that this new lab provides a “privileged space for the promotion of more active learning models, allowing pedagogical innovation initiatives to be fostered” and is also “in line with the department’s commitment” in terms of the training on offer in the area of “applied maths and computing”.
Rui A. Costa, co-CEO of Ubiwhere, spoke about the entire conception of this new space: "For us, at the time we decided and challenged the University of Aveiro to co-invest, it was a strategic investment” in the area of artificial intelligence, a sector in which Ubiwhere is committed, also in collaboration with the University of Aveiro through its students and researchers. Nuno Ribeiro, also co-CEO of Ubiwhere, emphasised that Ubiwhere’s aim is also to create “connections between customers and academia‘’ through, for example, the creation of algorithms. Paulo Jorge Ferreira, Rector of the University of Aveiro, recalled the emergence of artificial intelligence and its contribution to society and praised the partnership between Ubiwhere and the University of Aveiro.
